Beta-Glucuronidasen sind Mitglieder der Glycosidase-Familie von Enzymen, die den Abbau komplexer Kohlenhydrate katalysieren. Die menschliche & bgr; -Glucuronidase ist eine Art von Glucuronidase (ein Mitglied der Glycosidase-Familie 2), die die Hydrolyse von β-D-Glucuronsäureresten aus dem nicht-reduzierenden Ende von Mucopolysacchariden (auch als Glycosaminoglycane bezeichnet) wie Heparansulfat katalysiert. Die menschliche β-Glucuronidase befindet sich im Lysosom. Im Darm verwandelt die bürstengrenze β-Glucuronidase konjugiertes Bilirubin in die unkonjugierte Form zur Reabsorption. Beta-Glucuronidase ist auch in der Muttermilch vorhanden, die zu neonatalen Gelbsucht beiträgt.
